These 20 Butter Cookie Recipes for Every Season bring together the classics, crisp edges, buttery middles, and plenty of charm, no matter the time of year.

This is the kind of baking that feels like home. Warm oven, quiet mornings, something simple cooling on the counter while the kettle’s on. These recipes are easy to make, but they each have a little charm to them.
They’re the kind of butter cookies you bake to share, passed across the table, tucked into lunchboxes, or enjoyed quietly at the end of the day. And if a few don’t make it past the kitchen, that’s part of the tradition too.

Storing Butter Cookies
Butter cookies keep well, which makes them perfect for planning ahead. Each recipe above includes its own storage notes, but here are a few general guidelines to keep in mind:
Room temperature: Most butter cookies keep well in an airtight container for 7–10 days. Store different flavours separately if you prefer the tastes not to mingle.
Freezing baked cookies: Freeze in a single layer first, then pack into a sealed container or freezer bag. They hold up beautifully for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature.
Freezing the dough: Butter cookie dough freezes wonderfully. Wrap the dough well (or freeze sliced cookie dough on a tray) and store for up to 2 months. Thaw in the fridge before baking.
To refresh crisp cookies: If they soften, bake on a tray at 150°C / 300°F for 3–5 minutes to bring back that perfect crisp.
