Air Fryer Cinnamon French Toast (no butter, no oil)

Air Fryer Cinnamon French Toast is the ultimate weekend breakfast or quick dessert and takes no time at all to make.

They're crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside and taste delicious with a drizzle of maple syrup. Top with cream cheese or whipped cream berries, crushed walnuts or almond flakes for a decadent dessert.

Made within 15 minutes it's a quick and easy recipe that's perfect for the weekend but easy enough for everyday.

Although Air Fryer Cinnamon French Toast tastes best straight after cooking, they can also be made ahead and frozen.

Pro tips for making this recipe

Best bread for Air Fryer Cinnamon French Toast

  • Choose from thick slices of sandwich bread to French baguette (French loaf) or brioche for extra indulgent, restaurant-style cinnamon French toast.
  • Preferably slightly stale bread is best for French toast. Older, drier bread is better able to absorb the egg mixture without getting totally soggy and falling apart.
  • If the only bread you have is fresh, you could try toasting it very slightly first.

Use thick slices of bread

  • Whichever bread you choose, the secret here is to use thick slices at least ¾ inch /2 cm thick
  • I used thick slices of French baguette (French loaf)with hard crust around the white soft bread it produces amazing flavor and texture.

How long to soak the bread in the egg mixture

I found that one minute on each side for thick slices is perfect. Soak the bread for up to 5 minutes on each side if you prefer more of the egg mixture in your bread.

Make sure that the crust of the bread is coated in the egg mixture too.

Whisk the egg and milk mixture well

You don't want pieces of egg white showing up on your perfectly browned slices. Make sure to whisk the milk and eggs until well combined.

Prevent the French toast from sticking in the basket

Preheat your Air Fryer for at least 5 minutes before using.

Spray the basket or rack with non stick cooking spray.

Let any excess egg mixture drip off before transferring the bread to the air fryer.

Cinnamon sugar

I love only just coating the crust of the bread in the cinnamon sugar. It gives the French toast crust a beautiful golden color with a sweet crunch while the inside remains light and fluffy.

You can add a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar over the surface of the bread as well. That's if you prefer a sweeter flavor of course.

Make in advance, store and reheat

Although Air Fryer Cinnamon French Toast tastes best straight after cooking, they can also be made ahead and frozen.

In the fridge: Once cooked and cooled, store French toast in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

In the freezer: place the cooked French toast sticks on a lined baking sheet and freeze. Once frozen, transfer to a freezer bag and store in the freezer up to 3 months.

To reheat: Place the slices of french toast in the air fryer and reheat them at 350°F /180°C a few minutes until warmed through.

Ingredients
US Customary - Metric
  • 6 slices white bread sliced into ¾ inch /2 cm thickness see note 1

For the egg mixture

  • ½ cup milk (you can also use non-dairy milks such as almond and coconut)
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

For the cinnamon sugar

  • 2 Tablespoons white granulated sugar
  • ½ Tablespoon ground cinnamon
Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your airfryer to 350°F /180°C
  • Spray the basket or rack with non-stick cooking spray. (to prevent toast from sticking to the basket or rack)
  • Slice the bread into ¾ inch /2 cm thickness

Make the egg mixture

  • In a bowl, add the milk, eggs and vanilla. Whisk until well combined.

Make the cinnamon sugar

  • In a separate bowl combine the cinnamon and sugar.

Dip the bread in the egg mixture

  • Place the slices of bread into the egg mixture and soak for one minute. Flip the slices and soak for another minute. See note 2
  • Transfer the dipped bread onto a rack, allowing the excess egg mixture to drip off (I used a cookie cooling rack)

Sprinkle or roll in cinnamon sugar

  • You can either roll the crust (edge) of the bread in cinnamon sugar or sprinkle the sugar onto the surface of the dipped bread. See note 3

Cook the French toast:

  • Place the dipped slices in a single layer into the airfryer basket or rack. Avoid overlapping the slices.
  • Depending on your air fryer and size of slices you may have to work in batches.
  • Air fry for about 8 to 12 minutes, turning each slice halfway through the cooking time. Cook until just evenly brown and crispy. Keep in mind that cooking time will vary depending on the type of airfryer you have.
  • Remove from basket and allow to cool. Serve warm

Serving suggestions (all are optional)

  • Maple syrup / honey / golden syrup
  • Whipped cream
  • Cream cheese
  • Chopped walnuts/pecans/almonds
